Spark Rentals Inc. launched in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the Spring of 2015. We're focused on providing the best rental experience for AV systems, dance floors, staging, venue lighting and other DJ lighting and effects. Our vision is to be the go to supplier of affordable and unique DJ effects solutions for individuals and small event coordinators. Our History:
While Spark Rentals started in 2015, the rental story goes back to 2007 when now President & CEO, Sinan Leylek, purchased a fog machine right out of high school for a house party. As the months went by, he realized it wasn't getting as much use as he thought it would, so he placed on online classifieds ad to see if anyone wanted to rent the machine as part of a Halloween party or themed event. The calls started to come in, and he realized he was onto something. The problem was that one fog machine wasn't enough to keep up with demand, so he bought another one, followed by an even more powerful model.
Every October was sure to be a busy time for fog machine rentals, although it must have just been a coincidence that the horror movies The Fog (2005), The Mist (2005), and Haze (2007), were making their appearances on the silver screen. With nothing more than fog machines, it was a highly seasonal business. Then a call came in during the spring of 2009 while Leylek rode the bus Downtown that sparked (who said that?) the idea for Spark Rentals Inc.'s predecessor (and now American division); Party Pyrotechnics. A man was looking for a laser machine, and while Leylek didn't have one to rent, he was determined to find one to make the sale, thinking there could be many more to come.
Launching a website in the fall of 2009, Party Pyrotechnics was taking off with orders for events from concerts and socials, to movie sets and retail catalogue photo shoots, to First Nations high school grads in Northern Manitoba. All of this took place while Leylek pursued his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree at the Asper School of Business. By developing his business knowledge and skills over the years, he felt pursuing a rental business full-time was something he wanted to explore. The support from the entrepreneurship community was strong and after winning the Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion from Enactus Canada, he felt he was up to the challenge.
Upon graduating from the University of Manitoba in 2014, Leylek took eight months to pursue his passion of traveling, and backpacked around the world, which just so happened to coincide with several meetings with DJ effect equipment manufacturers in Guangzhou, China. Treated to wonderful hospitality, he saw first hand where equipment was being manufactured. These factory tours inspired him to bring emerging innovations in LED lighting technology, among others, back home to Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a long term goal of taking it to events across the country.
Spark Rentals Inc. was incorporated in April 2015, and on June 1st, 2015, opened a pop-up storefront in Portage Place Mall, as part of the Downtown Winnipeg Biz Launch It! Program. After this 5 month program came to an end, Spark Rentals opened it's first standalone storefront at 583 Selkirk Ave.
In 2016 Party Pyrotechnics was relaunched to serve the US market, as orders continued to come in from across the United States. Shipped via UPS, a variety of UV (black lights), fog machines, and LED lights would be sent to a mix of sweet sixteen birthday parties, school dances, and religious events, before customers would repack the equipment and attach a return shipping label to send them back north (or south for our Alaskan order).
Over the years, new product lines were continually added to its offering, reinforcing Spark Rentals to be the go to supplier of your event rental needs. Relationships were built with other rental vendors to expand the breadth of equipment at the same prices had you gone to them directly.
In 2022, Spark Rentals launched Canada's First Ice Bike Company, Ice Cycles, as a new winter division in an effort to diversify its offerings during the pandemic and encourage more people to find recreation and leisure in the outdoors in the winter months.
